That evening, we went out on the porch and watched the rain, as well as all of the left behind pieces that were floating in the river yard. I couldn’t believe that so much had changed in a few days, outside as well as in. The house was feeling more like a home, and the yard looked like a pool.

The rain seemed intent to wash everything away and even though the rain was supposed to break in the morning, there was still the worry that it wouldn’t happen like it was supposed to. What if it just kept raining?

Funny enough, I thought of the goons that followed us. They couldn’t get to me and the girls, if we were in the middle of a river. It seemed unlikely to say the least.

Then, I started to think about what would happen if Marcus was here when it happened. He would try to save us, naturally, because that’s just who he was, but that also meant that he could get hurt. It was easy to see how it would all play out. Marcus being around was a danger in more ways than one. He was a danger to me, because I was falling for him. He was a danger to himself, because he could be getting wound up into something that he wouldn’t want to have a part of. It was all my fault if something happened to him, and I would never be able to forgive myself.

Marcus came up behind me, his arms around me, asking me gently what was wrong. The kids were in bed, and we’d just come out here to watch the rain. I knew that he was in the mood, hell, he’d been in the mood all day, but that didn’t mean that I was going to go down that path with him, not when I was feeling like this.

“It’s a lot of rain.”

I could hear my voice breaking up and I chastised myself for getting all emotional. I was thinking about all of it, my life that had turned into a damn dumpster fire. There was no easy fix, hell, there was no hard fix, and it felt like it was never going to end.

Never being able to have a normal life, like the one I was pretending to have with Marcus, was all going to crash and burn.

One of my many rules was that I could never go back. Just like the kids knew that we would never see Shirley again, I knew that once we left, not too long from now, I was never going to get to come back here to Canton. I was going to be on my own, with the girls, lord only knew where. It was a mess and one that I couldn’t think my way out of.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

I leaned back against his shoulder, my ass grinding into his hard length that always seemed ready to take me at any moment. I wanted to distract him because there was no way that I wanted to answer questions.
